Doula Profile: Kashauna

I was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario with Jamaican roots.
I have always felt an unexplainable interest and pull towards maternal health and babies. That knowing
became a path of learning and purpose, leading me to be a Doula. I gain a sense of fulfilment every
chance I have to share knowledge and to care for someone in ways that allow them to care for
themselves and their baby.
Joining CommUnity Doulas felt like a natural alignment to me. Community is always at the heart of
everything I do and being part of a space dedicated to Black maternal health while building community
feels deeply affirming. I am grateful to do this work alongside those who hold the same values and
priorities, especially as Black people in support of Black families.
As a Doula, there is meaning in seeing a parent and baby grow together, to be witness to when there is a
shift in confidence and connection. I am excited by and honour the opportunities to be part of the small,
powerful moments when a parent learns something new about themselves and their baby.
Rest is my self-care and what that means to me is always evolving; sometimes for me it is simply sleep,
noise free moments to read (especially in fresh air) or pray and other times its bingewatching a home
reno show while my kids do whatever!
I strongly believe in the power of early bonding through nurturing touch and the benefits infant
massage can offer for a baby’s development and sense of security. I also bring my love for books
and connection into my work through Bibliotherapy, to create spaces for reflection, healing and
community through words.
